DSH Desktop frequently asked questions

Answers about downloads, installation, API keys, local data, plugin market, operating systems and the project's relationship with DeepSeek.

Which platforms does DSH Desktop support?

Formal installers are currently available for macOS Apple Silicon and Windows x64. Linux x64 ships as an AppImage in invite-only testing (see issue #19); macOS Intel can run from source and requires Node.js 24+.

How do I configure a model API key?

Open the app, go to DSH settings and paste the API key from your model provider. The key is managed by local DSH settings and is not uploaded to this site.

Where is my data stored?

Profiles, sessions and local runtime data default to ~/.dsh. You can change the location with DSH_DATA_ROOT.

Will DSH Desktop overwrite an existing profile?

No. Startup reads existing profiles without rewriting them. Offline initialization is used only when creating a new profile.

How do I install more DSH plugins?

Open Plugin Market in the app's Settings, review the source, version, compatibility and permissions, then install. The plugin ecosystem page lists the default bundles.

Why do in-app updates fail on macOS (v0.2.4 and earlier)?

This is a known issue: macOS builds up to v0.2.4 ship without the updater config file, so the title-bar update button cannot finish downloading. Download and install the latest build manually once from the download page; auto-updates work normally afterwards. Windows builds are not affected.

What is the relationship with DeepSeek?

DSH Desktop is an independent community project built on DeepSeek Harness and the Cordis plugin system, with no affiliation, partnership, authorization or endorsement from DeepSeek. The project code is released under the MIT License.

What is the relationship with the official desktop?

The official desktop (@deepseek-ai/dsh-desktop) is DeepSeek's own Electron shell inside the DeepSeek Harness repository — version-locked to the DSH runtime, using a dedicated profiles/desktop, and without public installers as of this writing. DSH Desktop is an independent community distribution: installable today, with a fixed and verified bundle lineup and a manageable plugin market. The two use separate Profile directories, so installing both on the same machine does not interfere; this project also tracks the evolution of the official shell.

What if macOS says the developer cannot be verified?

Confirm that the file came from the GitHub Release linked by this site. If the prompt remains, right-click the app in Applications and choose Open, or allow it under System Settings → Privacy & Security.

What if Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer?

Confirm that the file came from GitHub Releases and has the expected name. If SmartScreen still warns you, choose More info and then Run anyway.

What if GitHub downloads are slow?

Copy the asset URL from the GitHub Release page and use a download manager. Check the release file name and checksum information before installing.

Can I use my own plugins?

Plugins that match the official DSH Bundle and dshClient contracts generally work without rewriting. Plugins that need windows, native file dialogs or Browser Workspace must use the corresponding narrow Host contract.
